Villarreal come into this encounter against Real Sociedad hoping for a turn around in form after a poor start to the season after losing by a 1-0 scoreline late on to Levante despite dominating periods of the game. Villarreal wsold some of their key players from last season with the likes of Muchassio, Johnathon Dos Santos and Roberto Soldado being transferred out. Coming in they have signed some decent players like Fornals, Barca, Semedo, Unal and these players will take some time to adjust themselves in order to settle in. Villarreal will have to forget last week’s game and focus on their travels now against Real Sociedad.
Fornals and Sansone are playing in the wide spots and being backed up by full backs like Costa and Rukavina to give them plenty of width in order to cross balls into the box for Unal and Barca to pounce on. They will know that the other teams won’t necessarily fear their offense, and will look to keep the ball out of the bones to put pressure on Villarreal. Villarreal have been averaging 4 corners per game throughout last season and started off this campaign smashing 6 as they chased a chance to score a goal. They will feel they will be on the back foot for most of this game, so lots of corners will be expected to come. Last season away from home they also averaged 4 corners per game.
When you take Villarreal’s record against teams near them in the table, there is confidence that corners will flow. Their results read as: Bilbao (4,5); Sociedad (4,3); Deportivo Alavaes (11,12); Valencia (7,0). Sociedad conversely have leaked 4.5 corners per game as an average and already shipped 5 to Celta Vigo in their opening encounter of this season.
I expect Villarreal to go after this game, and try to not concede and break on the counter attack; and for that reason we might some some substantial corners being knocked in today. I am backing Villarreal to net over 3.5 corners.
