Even though the game started in the worst possible way for Atletico in the first leg, the team managed to pull out more than decent 1:1 draw in London and are now favorites to progress to the finals of Europa League. They stood playing with a man less already in tenth minute when right back Vrsaljko got excluded but the team managed to fight back.
Despite much of the ball possession and chances created from the Gunners, Atletico managed to fight back and be dangerous on counter attacks leveling up the result in 82nd minute with a goal from Griezmann. Overall, they should be happy since goalkeeper Oblak saved them for more than couple of times. As for domestic league, the team comes from a narrow 1:0 victory away from home against Alaves last weekend. Only goal was scored back in 78th minute from a penalty kick taken by Gameiro.
Even though the winning goal came late and from a penalty kick, it should be said that it was fully deserved and that the team from Madrid missed couple of really good chances prior to leading goal including one penalty kick as well. They continue to be at the second position with four points more than third placed local rivals from Real Madrid.
Hosts should continue in 4-4-2 formation with Griezmann and Costa as forwards. Right back Sime Vrsaljko (20/0) is suspended following red card in first leg. Injured remain right back Juanfran (15/0) and left back Filipe Luis (17/1) both missing for some time already.
The Gunners had huge advantage in the first leg since thye played with a man more since tenth minute, however despite having a man more and a lead, they couldn’t keep the positive result till the very end.
They did looked like controlling the ball and the game, have taken the lead in 61st minute with a goal from Lacazette but actulaly looked vulnerable via counter attacks and paid the price of it towards the end.
As for the domestic Premiership, they suffered narrow 2:1 loss last Sunday afternoon away to Manchester United in quite meaningless game for them. They have stood without competitive motive being at sixth position without chance to reach Champions League. The team was bit rotated due European duties as the hosts looked more concrete and got a victory thanks to late goal from Fellaini. Overall, the game itself didn’t look very offensive one and the Gunners didn’t deserve more with their defensive approach.
The Gunners should play in 4-3-2-1 formation with Lacazette as central striker, plus Ozil and Mkhitaryan as offensive midfielder. Forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (7/6) can’t play here, while injured remains defensive midfielder Mohamed Elneny (13/0). Midfielder Santi Cazorla is still sidelined too.
~ Arsenal are undefeated in their last 5 matches (UEFA Europa League).
Arsenal had a perfect chance in London but they blew it. Now when the English side needs to attack and open up during the match, it’s difficult to see them not conceding more than once simply since they already looked vulnerable at Atletico’s counters – something thats the strongest weapon of the home team for years now.
