Gijon failed to meet the expectations last time on the road to Sabadell when they come with a 1:1 draw, clearly lacking a bit more sharpness at the finishing.
They conceded first from the penalty in the 23rd, but approached the second part visibly in a more aggressive manner and successfully leveled up over Djurdjevic in the 54th minute, unfortunately, not being creative enough for something more despite several nice chances till the end.
Gijon is at 5th spot in the standings, being six points in deficit compared to Espanyol and a directly promotional 2nd place.
Midfielder Garcia (26/1) and striker Djurdjevic (29/20) are missing out on international duty. Midfielder Fuego (28/0) is suspended.
Alcorcon appeared quite passive in their last clash at home against Rayo Vallecano and, not surprisingly, suffered a convincing 0:3 defeat.
The hosts lacked ideas on how to be more concrete during their time with the ball but didn’t shine in the back too, as they conceded two goals during the first part. The game rhythm significantly decreased in the continuation, but that didn’t stop the visitors from being effective one more time in the last minutes, thus, settling the final score to a convincing 0:3.
Alcorcon occupies the 19th spot on the table, still with a chance to avoid the relegation battle, as they have the same amount of points as safely positioned Castellon.
The guests will miss defender Fernandez (29/1), midfielder Bravo (26/0) and forwards Jimenez (6/2) and Arribas (30/2).
Can’t afford a setback
A situation for Gijon is pretty straight-forward in the upcoming clash. A victory simply comes as an imperative if they want to stay in the race for the 2nd spot. Judging by their overall appearances this season, that shouldn’t be much of a problem, as Alcocron clearly lacks the quality to be competitive here, while the hosts have every reason to attack from the very start.
The hosts do miss a couple of influential players, but so do the visitors that are showing extremely little lately in the offense.
