Switzerland has been drawn in a pretty difficult group together with Spain, Germany, and Ukraine, so their point after two matches doesn’t come as a real surprise. They looked decent, but ineffective also in a 2:1 loss away to Ukraine earlier in September, while they looked even better against Germany in Basel in a 1:1 game a few days later.
Despite being back in the scoreline already in the fourteenth minute, they opted for an offensive approach and got the equalizer via Widmer in the 58th minute – continuing to show more till the end of the second halftime.
Defender Lang (31/3, Gladbach), midfielders Steffen (12/0, Wolfsburg), Aebischer (3/0, Young Boys) and forwards Embolo (38/4, Gladbach), Ajeti (11/1, Celtic) and Drmic (35/10, Norwich) are not part of the team this time.
Croatia suffered two defeats at the start of the new edition of the UEFA Nations League, firstly away to Portugal 4:1, disappointing a bit since the Portuguese created chance after chance with great ease.
A couple of days later, they visited France and suffered yet another loss, this time with a 4:2 result being quite competitive for some time during the match, but also not being that creative with the ball to their feet. As time progressed, certain vulnerabilities were obvious in their defense.
Goalkeeper Kalinic (19/0, Aston Villa), defenders Vrsaljko (45/0, Atletico Madrid), Mitrovic (12/2, Club Brugge), midfielder Rakitic (106/15, Sevilla) and forward Rebic (36/3, Milan) won’t play this time.
Game to build up the momentum
There’s no doubt that both teams will rotate their squad as it’s only just a preparational game for the continuation of the UEFA Nations League campaign. Even so, I expect both nations to enter this clash quite motivated, as they both definitely could benefit from a more steady and concrete appearance in the attack.
Since they both appear much better in the offense recently, plus should use this match as a kind of morale-booster, both teams to score seems like the most appropriate option, maybe even after the first halftime already.
