Union Berlin improved drastically in the recent weeks before the international break, as they firstly progressed in the DFB Pokal game away to Freiburg, then continued with positive performances in Bundesliga.
The side now comes from back to back victories, firstly at home against Hertha and then on the road to Mainz 2:3.
It must be said, they had complete control over the game and only allowed the home side to reduce twice within the last phase of the match.
They are now close to the middle of the table with four points more than playout placed Mainz and need to keep up in the same way.
Midfielder Andrich (11/0) is suspended now. Injured are offensives Abdullahi (3/0), Gogia (3/0) and midfielder Promel (2/0). Central back Parensen (2/0) and offensive midfielder Becker (8/0) are doubtful.
Gladbach also looked really well in the previous weeks, clinching the break with two victories in Bundesliga – away to Leverkusen and at home against Werder.
In between, there was an important win over Italian giants Roma in Europa League. The most recent was a victory at home against Werder, in a match where they sealed the victory thanks to goals in 20th and 22nd minute via Bensebaini and Herrmann, in quite an open game overall.
The team from Werder had also more than a couple of good chances, but this time it was Gladbach who had complete control over the match only conceding int eh third minute of added time.
They continue to lead the table with four points more than the closest followers from RB Leipzig, Bayern, and Freiburg.
The guests miss left back Bensebaini (3/1) due to suspension. Central back Jantschke (7/0) is doubtful, plus a few more that anyway didn’t play so far. Offensive Embolo (9/3) is under question mark as well.
Gladbach has scored at least 2 goals in 6 of their last 7 matches (Bundesliga).
Union Berlin has started with a bit more offensive and relaxed approach in recent matches and it started paying off to them.
Now, when they welcome the league leaders, there’s no doubt that the hosts know that they can’t afford to play in a passive and defensive way. Gladbach anyway comes for all three points and a mix of these promises quite an open match from both sides.
